Secrets Revealed at Bletchley Park

On the Bank Holiday, my family visited Bletchley Park. Now the word going through your head right now is 'What?' so let me explain. Bletchley Park is the home of British code breaking and also the birthplace of modern technology. Basically, it's where all the code breaking was done during World War II!

When we arrived at Bletchley Park, my family and I walked into the first exhibition. It was all about the history of the World War two. We then walked around Huts 3, 6 and 8. They were very interesting and factual but also fun because there was interactive activities. We then had lunch in the cafĂ©. In the garden there was a playground and a giant chess board. Our next stop was the mansion, where we learnt about the Imitation Game, the Oscar-nominated movie - starring Benedict Cumberbatch - which was filmed partly at Bletchley Park. Hut 11 was next which was all about the machines the code breakers used to crack the enigma, the code the Germans used. In there wel earnt how to do it ourselves using another interactive media. Finally, our trip was over and we headed home. Overall, it was an amazing day.

If you want to visit from March 1st to 31st October come from 9:30 - 5:00, and if you want to visit from November 1st - February 28th come from 9:30 - 4:00. For children under 12, it's free, from children 12-17 it's £10.25 and for adults it's £17.25. For more prices visit the website.

I would really recommend visiting Bletchley Park and if you live in Britain, hope you had a great bank holiday!

Filling an empty hole on this blog: Holes by Louis Sachar

Hellooooooooooooooooooooo! I am so sorry I haven't been blog posting, I've got a really big test coming up and I've been studying quite a bit. Also, when I have had some spare time and opened up my laptop I haven't felt like blogging...  But enough of my blabbering on that  I'm now going to give you a post with a book review of the great Holes, by Louis Sachar.

Louis Sachar has written multiple books, one of which I have loved and will be reviewing today:

Holes:
Holes is about Stanley whose family have a reputation for bad luck, and when he is sent to Camp Green Lake - which, funnily enough, isn't green and doesn't have a lake - it was simply a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Every day he and the other boys are told to dig a hole, five foot wide and five foot deep, reporting anything found. The warden claims that this labour is character building, but Stanley is suspicious and needs to dig up the truth.

I really like this book because of the flashbacks and clever links throughout the story. Also Holes is really gripping, thrilling and when you finally put it all together it's a bit like completing a jigsaw puzzle.

I would recommend this book this book to 8-12 years old who like cleverly written books that are satire. WARNING: You have to persevere with this book until the end otherwise it won't make any sense at all whatsoever and you will go away thinking it's a rubbish book, which it isn't.

I am in the process of reading another of Louis Sachar's brilliant books called the Cardturner, and already it is an amazing book.

My brother is a superhero by David Solomons

Hello! As you may know, Waterstones Children's book prize is coming up soon and my sister got a bundle of the books. The first one I read was My brother is a superhero by David Solomons published by Nosy Crow. So here's a review of it.

Luke, an eleven-year-old who loves comics, has a treehouse which he shares with his nerdy older brother Zack. But, Luke makes the big mistake of going to the toilet right at the time his older brother, who had never read a comic in his life got given superpowers. Luke is outraged. Zack is told he has to save two worlds and there's no time for moping as someone has to make sure Zack's going to do it right. But, one day, disaster strikes and Zack gets kidnapped by his arch-enemy Nemesis. Luke and his friends have to save him before it's too late.

My favourite part was when Zack got kidnapped and Luke and his friends had to go and save him. It was filled with immense drama and tension. I just had to know if they were going to succeed, so I might have ended up reading way past my bedtime - fingers crossed my mum doesn't read this post.

I would rate this book 4/5 stars and I would recommend it to boys or girls aged 8-10 who love comics or adventure stories.

Here are a few quotes on the book:

Steve Coogan says: “You’ll laugh until you fall out of your tree house!”

Kirsty Stansfield, Fiction Editor at Nosy Crow says says: "The idea behind this book is genius. It’s funny and clever, and the way Luke steps up to help his older brother despite the MASSIVE UNFAIRNESS of it all is a joy to read. My Brother is a Superhero is a great book destined for greatness.”

Poppy's Hero by Rachel Billington

Hello! I'm am here with my first official post, a book review of Poppy's Hero by Rachel Billington. It is about a girl named Poppy and when she discovers that her father is in prison, she is angry. Seeing her wonderful father in a London prison looking pale and sad makes her think of a brilliant idea: to free her father. She and her friends invent all kinds of escape plans for him - until she hears that he has been removed to a prison far away on an island, with five years to serve. Can she help him?

Front Cover:

First of all, I just have to say, I LOVE the fonts for the title. *checks the font* Airplanes in the Night Sky and Red Velvet. Yes, I actually went and checked the fonts - #dontjudgemeimobsessedwithit
Moving on, I love the photo - I mean who doesn't like the seaside? The way the sun hits on the water is really beautiful,  and I think the seagulls in the background give it a nice finishing touch.  The reason why I picked this particular book out of the library was because it made you feel really calm and relaxed, which is good marketing by the publishers Frances Lincoln Children's books.

Here are a few quotes on the book:
‘This book is an excellent read and can be enjoyed by adults as well as younger people. With an original storyline, interesting format and a believable ending this book is an excellent addition to the library stock.’The School Librarian

‘Sharply realistic' Books for Keeps

‘A fast moving story about family, friends and adventure’ Carousel

I would recommend Poppy's Hero to children from 9-12 year olds who like a bit of drama, escape and mystery!

There also is another book called Poppy's Angel which I'm going to read soon.
